01.09.10 Limited abalone fishing now permitted in the Illawarra area
Industry & Investment NSW (I&I NSW) has re-opened part of the NSW coast from Botany Bay to Wreck Bay that was previously closed, to allow commercial and limited recreational abalone fishing.
Recreational fishing for abalone in this area will only be permitted on weekends and NSW public holidays directly adjacent to weekends.
I&I NSW Senior Fisheries Manager, Cameron Westaway, said the area had been closed to both recreational and commercial fishing for some years due to concerns about depleted stocks and the impact of an outbreak of a naturally occurring disease caused by
the Perkinsus parasite.
“The independent Total Allowable Catch Committee, which sets the total commercial catch, believed there were some signs of recovery of stocks in the area and recommended that a limited commercial take of four tonnes would provide information on the status of
stock,” Mr Westaway said.
“We have now implemented that recommendation and have also allowed for the recreational take of abalone in the area on weekends and adjacent NSW public holidays.
“The area from Port Stephens to Botany Bay will remain closed to both commercial and recreational fishing for abalone until there is evidence of stock recovery in that area.” Areas north of Port Stephens and south of Wreck Bay are open to commercial and
recreational fishing under the existing rules.
Recreational fishers are reminded that the possession limit in waters open to the taking of abalone in NSW is two per person and the minimum prescribed legal length for abalone in NSW is 11.7 centimetres.
I&I NSW Fisheries Compliance Director, Glenn Tritton, said that abalone is now listed as a priority species under the Fisheries Management Act and persons found guilty of trafficking abalone face up to 10 years imprisonment.
“Limiting recreational take to weekends and adjacent public holidays will not only help limit the catch while the stocks continue to be monitored, but will also assist fisheries officers to concentrate efforts on catching abalone thieves. “Recently introduced legislation has significantly increased penalties for abalone theft and offenders now faced large fines and significant goal time.
“I&I NSW is committed to protecting our marine resources for future generations and our fisheries officers will continue to target people involved in illegal abalone activity.”
A list of the recreational fishing rules is available at www.dpi.nsw.gov.au/fisheries.

18.08.10 Dinner with the Fishwife

The Fish Wife
Check out the top selling cook book by Rachel McGlashan - Dinner with the Fishwife. Rachel McGlashan, Al's wife, has always fished and worked right alongside Al (the fishing not so much since the expansion of the family!!) Her much admired tag line "Working hard so that Al can fish hard!!" says it all. With Al fishing over 200 days of the year, someone has to keep the wheels of the business running!

Al and Rach met through work where Rach was literally Al's boss! (Al maintains she still is!!) Before meeting Al, Rach had never been fishing or even out on a boat, of course that all changed pretty quickly.  Only a couple of years later Al decided to jump full time into his present gig and the rest they say is history!

Rachel has tried all sorts of fishing with Al, even having fly fishing lessons, learning to build rods and catching her grandslam of Marlin! But she likes nothing better than seeing her boys falling in love with the sport, heading out with Dad and coming back so proud with their catch for Mum to cook up!

Rachel has now gone and branched out on her own in the family business, writing Dinner with the Fishwife. While Rachel contributed to Al's last two books (The Complete Fishing Bible and How to Catch Fish and Cook it) with a taste of her recipes, Dinner With the Fishwife brings you a selection of original fish-based recipes, demonstrating just how easily you can incorporate seafood into your meals.

Rachel found that eating fish 4-5 nights a week brought challenges with it, like how to still keep it interesting, and not serving up grilled BBQ fish every night. And while Rachel admits that her and Al's favourite is Tuscan seasoned BBQ'd fish, even they can't eat that every night.  So she started experimenting and the result is a collection of recipes that are easy to prepare and make.

"I am no Chef. I am a mother and a fisherman's wife, and what I do well is to use what I have available to me - and that is a lot of fresh fish!"

11.08.10 VOTE TO FISH

The upcoming federal election represents the most important election in Australia’s history for anglers.
Most anglers have little time for the ranting and raving within our political system. And who could blame them. The angler’s world is the natural world of aquatic ecosystems and the great outdoors. A far cry from the often farcical, plastic world that is politics.

Most anglers treasure their pastime and as a result are true conservationists of the marine environment. However, the looming federal election hides a threat to all anglers and will prove a pivotal point in the history of recreational fishing in Australia. For this reason, it is most important that anglers take far more care in voting than ever before!

The Greens have played their hand and stated that they intend to turn an absolute minimum of 30% of Australian commonwealth waters into marine parks. This is on top of extensive existing and proposed state-based marine parks. Considering that marine parks are revised every 5-10 years and more or larger Sanctuary Zones are created each revision, then it is feasible that within a short period of time we could be banned from fishing virtually all of our favourite areas if The Greens secure the balance of power in the Australian Senate.

It is important that anglers are aware that The Australian Labor Party has prostituted itself to The Greens by agreeing to a preference deal with them. As we know The Greens are hell bent on locking Australians out of marine and terrestrial areas and virtually banning the many outdoor pastimes that make us Australian!

In essence, this only leaves The Shooters and Fishers Party, The Liberal Party, The Nationals and The Australian Fishing and Lifestyle Party (QLD only) that represent the interests of anglers. Any vote for The Australian Labor Party or any party offering preferences to The Greens will put your treasured pastime of fishing at risk!

07.07.10 2010 State of Origin Fishing Competition
The State Of Origin Fishing Competition is an annual event which pitches Queensland VS New South Wales against each other in friendly fishing rivalry. The 2010 State Of Origin Competition will be held on the stunning Brunswick River and surrounds allowing anglers to experience a varied playing field which includes typical estuary, beach and offshore options. The events aims to cater for the whole family, with thousands of dollars worth of prizes up for grabs, substantial lucky door prizes and even a Junior category of the competition. 2010 will host the 2nd annual event of this name with the 2009 event being dubbed a huge success.

The event is somewhat unique in its conservative nature. In contrast to many of the dead weigh in events that exist in the scene, the State Of Fishing Competition utilizes a photo entry format. This allows all fish caught to be released. The organisers of the event do not demand this to be done, and if a competitor wants to keep a feed that’s up to them. This photo entry method does however ensure that no fish are strung up and weighed purely for trophy reasons.

Categories for the event include: Longest Bream, Longest Jewfish/Mulloway, Longest Flathead, Longest Tailor and Best Junior Entry. There are also prizes for a “Lucky Door Fish” (chosen at random for all fish registered) and of course other lucky door prizes. These fantastic prizes have been kindly donated by event sponsors: Uncharted Tackle, Lox, Flying Fisherman Polarized Eye Wear and Two Bent Rods.

The event HQ will be located at the Ferry Reserve Holiday Park in Brunswick Heads. For more information on this event, or to register, please don’t hesitate to visit the Brisbane Fishing Online Website: www.brisbanefishing.com.au

Good fishing!

25.12.09 Merry Christmas !!!
From all at The Fishin Hub - we'd like to wish all of our members and visitors a great Christmas and a happy and safe new year! Look forward to a big year in 2010 - See you all then. Cheers! TFH

19.12.09 Fisho's Support Needed !!!

We have been astounded to learn that from 31st January 2010, 3 Sharks (Longfin Mako, Shortfin Mako & Porbeagle) will be added to the same list as the Great White. This has potentially catastrophic consequences for game fishing in NSW, Victoria, South Australia & Tasmania, but this is a blanket ban on the whole of Australia.

This could be the start of the end in another nail in the coffin for Recreational fishing as we know it........ What’s next? Tuna? Bill fish? Snapper? Whiting?

All recreational fisherpersons need to band together and Show the government that we have large numbers of people who vote and are willing to band together to help preserve our fantastic sport.

Because of a depletion in sharks in the Mediterranean (Europe) caused by heavy commercial shark finning, the new law set to come in at the end of January that affects Australian commonwealth waters. Recreational anglers are up in arms over this ridiculous new law …

Today I spoke with the NSW DPI as they strongly appose the new law also, on to occasions since they where informed about the new law they have written back opposing such an unsubstantiated law. DPI  will also give me Tag and release data to support   Dr Julian Pepperrel ‘s  scientific evidence that the makos off our east coast do not migrate to the other side off the world .So there for the band here would be highly insignificant to help their situation over there ….

Also the commercial long liner fleet here where granted an exemption from this new law over a month ago, why didn’t it get passed down to recreational anglers???? As we have much less of an impact than them, recreational anglers have Mako shark as part of their diet during the peak of the Mako season and is regularly consumed.
Tim Simpson editor of blue water sport fishing mag will be doing a great story in the next issue (77) set to come out in early Jan. He has been chasing up the facts on this issue for some time now.

The rally and support for the exemption is snowballing fast but time is running out and with the xmas break the government sure picked a good time of the year to push it thru …

If this law gets introduced it will have a major impact not only on the retail fishing tackle shops stand to lose millions ,but also the recreational angler as it will loose a magnificent sports fish and table fish.

I will be holding an open  public forum meeting to UNITE  all fisher people and friends alike to discuss and share thoughts on the best ways to fight this ridiculous new law set to come in  , we need to put  our best foot forward to fight this issue ,if we lose our Mako fishing while being in such healthy numbers off Australia , then what next , Marlin , TUNA ???? Maybe even snapper in the future.
We will have drafted letters there ready to sign, so we can post out to the appropriate government ministers involved (Peter Garret and Greg Hunt).

Greg Barea

24.10.09 Marine Park Lockout - Info & Petition

This is an issue that the Liberals & Nationals feel strongly about. We believe that fishing is one of the great Australian pastimes but that it is under threat by the State Labor Government’s ‘lockup and throw away the key’ policy.

The NSW Liberals & Nationals, with the support of ECOFishers, have launched an online petition, www.stopmarinelockout.com.au calling for an immediate moratorium on the creation of any more marine parks in NSW.

It’s time NSW fishermen sent a strong message to Labor that they will not be locked out of their own waterways.

Decisions surrounding marine parks need to be based on proper scientific research.

The NSW Liberals & Nationals are currently working with stakeholders to make sure a future Coalition Government will deliver good marine parks policies to properly protect NSW's marine environment, while making sure that future generations of recreational fishers are not locked out of prime fishing areas.

Please join our campaign to call for an immediate moratorium on the creation of more marine parks in NSW by logging on to  www.stopmarinelockout.com.au and signing your name.

Regards

Duncan Gay
Shadow Minister for Industry

03.02.09 Anglers chance to help research

The Minister for Primary Industries Ian Macdonald is asking Sydney anglers to help with a NSW Department of Primary Industries (DPI) research program to measure and maximise the survival of yellowtail kingfish after release.

“The NSW DPI has been examining ways to improve the survival of released angler-caught fish since 2004,” Mr Macdonald said. “Some of the funding for the research is derived from angler licence fees, through the Saltwater Recreational Fishing Trust.

“We are trying to determine the best ways that anglers can treat their released fish.

DPI research scientist Dr Paul Butcher said the aim of the next phase of the research was to quantify the survival and damage to yellowtail kingfish after being caught and released during conventional angling.

The information will be used to identify methods that anglers might adopt to reduce any unwanted mortality or damage to their fish.

The experiment will be carried out in Sydney Harbour starting 21 February and involve boat-based anglers catching and releasing yellowtail kingfish over two days.

All sizes of angled fish will be released into floating cages and then monitored for four days.

Any anglers who would like to participate in this research, even if only for a few hours, should contact Dr Butcher on either 0266 483 910 or Paul.Butcher@dpi.nsw.gov.au

22.12.08 Boab Boat Shed at Winding - Open!!
Federal Member for Throsby Jennie George today officially opened Lake Illawarra’s new Boat Shed.

Located in Fern Street, Windang, the Boat Shed is a one-stop shop for people looking to spend a day on the water – offering bait, tackle, refreshments and boat hire (through locally-operated Boab Boat Hire).

Boab Boat Hire director Anthony Gelfius said there had been a great deal of support for such a facility in the region for many years.

“The Boat Shed provides greater opportunity for locals and tourists to make use of Lake Illawarra,” Mr Gelfius said. “We believe having a place where people can hire a boat will encourage more families to get out and enjoy everything our area has to offer.

“This and other facilities currently being considered will serve only to increase the popularity of the region from a tourism perspective.”

The Boat Shed will be open most days during the school holidays. Drop by and check it out at 18 Fern Street, Windang, or call 1300 00 2622

12.12.08 Stand & Be Heard
All,

With respect, the fight started over a decade ago. Sydney's just been asleep.

We have experienced the lies and deceit you will now be subjected to and we have felt the pain of being ignored by a government that works cooperatively with extremists and shows little interest in the views of those that elected it.

Remember, the main target must be the government because they make the decisions. And because they have already promised the greens this park in return for their preferences.

The NPA and later the MPA are just storm troupers sent in to test the water and deflect the initial barrage.

If you need evidence of this; the government's silence on the Sydney marine park has been deafening.

Where are the rebuttals of the ludicrous claims made by the NPA you'd expect from a responsible government? There are none because it weakens naive inner city support for the park.

And why do they need to refer it to the MPA. Have they forgotten they have assured us Sydney has an adequate matrix of marine reserves already?

The government lacks internal fortitude and deliberately hides behind the skirts of childishly simple green groups and a scientifically fraudulent Marine Park Authority.

Ministers MacDonald and Tebbut will then come out of hiding to resolve the dispute, that they created, with a "compromise".

A compromise where you will always lose.

This formula has been used for each successive MP established in NSW.

Don't fall for this ploy, go straight for the government's "throat" and, if you want any chance of winning, be prepared to "sever the head".

And watch out for this one: "Tell us your favourite spots so we don't lock them up?" There are times when silence is golden.

Solidarity is the key. The rest of NSW will back you up. You can depend on us.

Good fishing and good luck

15.11.08 Proposed closure of Gaden Trout Hatchery

Fellow anglers,

The NSW government has announced in its Mini‐budget of 11 November 2008 cost‐cutting measures including “Consolidation of excess offices and research stations over the next three years at Alstonville, Berry, Condobolin, Glen Innes, Gosford, Griffith, Temora, and Jindabyne Hatchery.”
On 12 November Hon Ian Macdonald, Minister for Primary Industries announced in a media release “Eight facilities that are no longer needed by the Department will be closed,” he said. “These facilities are at Alstonville, Berry, Condobolin, Glen Innes, Gosford, Griffith, Jindabyne Hatchery and Temora.”
So, the primary trout hatchery in NSW, with its irreplaceable stock of disease free trout and salmon, is ‘no longer needed’!
The importance of Gaden Trout Hatchery to our trout fishery in NSW hardly needs explaining to fellow anglers, but it appears that the State government doesn’t understand it at all, and is prepared to shut or flog off the most important trout fishery asset built in NSW in the last 120 years of trout
fishing.
The only way to stop this happening is to put immediate and intense pressure on the State government to stop the sale or closure. If you have any interest at all in the future of trout fishing as a pastime, or in the future of the economies of many regional centres in NSW that depend on fishing
based tourism, PLEASE take some time and contact as many people as you can, by post, email or
phone, and make your views clear.
You should contact members of the NSW Labor government, asking them to reverse this decision. You should ask members of the NSW opposition parties for support on this issue; You should contact local government mayors and councillors and express your concern that closure of Gaden Trout Hatchery will affect local economies; and you should raise the issue in local newspapers.

When writing your letters:

   • Write to as many people as possible.
   • Keep your letters clear, polite and to the point.
   • Address to each person individually (ie not a photocopied letter or group email)
   • The portfolios of politicians are noted below—make points that are relevant to their particular portfolios.
   • Also write to your local NSW Member of Parliament. If that person is not listed below, find their contact details on the NSW Parliament website, www.parliament.nsw.gov.au.
   • Do not send attachments with emails—put your message directly into the body of the email.
   • Numerous individual letters will be more influential than petitions.
Key issues to raise are:
   • The importance of trout stocking in NSW—hatcheries have been needed for over a century to sustain the recreational trout fishery in streams and impoundments.
   • The importance of hatcheries being managed by government and anglers who have a desire
for equitable and ongoing availability of fish stocks for public angling.
   • The pivotal role of trout fishing in the Snowy Mountains economy, including jobs based on angling tourists (estimated in 2001 by Dominion Consulting as $70 million per annum)
   • The extraordinary contribution made by recreational anglers, clubs and acclimatisation societies over the past 100 years, volunteering time and effort and contributing the financial support that made Gaden Trout Hatchery possible in the first place.
   • The State government’s ongoing dependence on acclimatisation societies to distribute fish
from the Gaden Trout Hatchery.
   • The unique importance of the disease‐free trout, brook trout and Atlantic salmon stock held at Gaden.
   • The lack of any other hatchery operation in the State capable of producing significant amounts of disease free stock.
   • The waste of over 50 years of investment in this valuable asset if it is sold to the private sector for short term financial gain.

Who to contact:

An extensive list of suggested contacts follows. At the very least, please send letters to Premier Nathan Rees and Hon Steve Whan (Member for Monaro). Contact details are on the next page. Also please send a copy of your letters to Hon Secretary, NSW CFA, GPO Box 84, Sydney 2001, or if
sending email messages, cc to the NSW CFA Hon Secretary Vladimir Diakiw, diakiwv@optusnet.com.au.

Please contact as many other people on the list as possible. Remember to send this letter on to other anglers and ask them to do the same.

This press release was written by the NSW Council of Freshwater Anglers.

13.08.08 Latest Fishing World Mag Out Now

Jigging With The Masters

Catching really big fish on specialised jig tackle in deep water is probably the most exciting and extreme fishing you can do. And when you combine expert Japanese jiggers with monster kingies, you get some explosive action! SEAN CUMMINGS reports.

“OH no, another strike, and I know it's gonna hurt!” Twenty metres off the bottom the jig had been demolished. In that split second after the strike, when the fish was working out that something wasn’t right, my mind struggled to process what was happening and what would happen. A heartbeat later I was dragged to the rail and locked into a battle with another denizen of the deep. Welcome to the Three Kings!

27.07.08 Shimano Japan aquires 100% shareholding in Dunphy Holdings Ltd
Recreational fishing equipment industry leader Shimano has become the sole shareholder of its business in Australia and the South Pacific region including New Zealand. The company this week (July 22) acquired the balance of its shares from its Australian importer and wholesaler of 27 years, Dunphy Sports/Fishing Imports Pty Ltd. The shares were owned by company founders John and Kerry Dunphy and Mark Mikkelsen. Shimano will continue to trade in the region as Dunphy Sports/Fishing Imports Pty Ltd and will retain the current management team, staff and agents. Since 1986, Shimano has held a 49 percent shareholding in Dunphy Holdings Ltd. Dunphy Sports/ Fishing Imports P/L is a wholly owned subsidiary of Dunphy Holdings Ltd. This week’s purchase acquires the remaining 51 percent. John Dunphy and Mark Mikkelsen, together with their management team and 70 staff members, will continue in their current roles. Mr Dunphy has welcomed Shimano’s acquisition investment and says he believes it represents an impressive vote of confidence in the Australian recreation fishing industry. He has been involved with Shimano since 1980, when the manufacturer first approached him to become its agent and distributor in Australia. Mr Dunphy said Shimano’s acquisition will be positive in consolidating the company’s sustained growth achieved in recent years as well as further enhancing the strong working relationship the Dunphy Sports team has with Shimano. He said he looked forward to Shimano creating and pursuing additional opportunities in Australia and the South Pacific region. Shimano also would continue innovations designed to further grow the company, he said. Dunphy Sports/Fishing Imports P/L will continue to develop and market its highly successful lure ranges, including Squidgy soft plastics and Stiffy hard baits. Mr Dunphy expressed his appreciation of the company’s long-standing relationship with its loyal customer base and said he looked forward to remaining an integral part of the business. The Shimano brand is synonymous with quality product and has evolved to be the number one brand in the Australia’s fishing industry, enjoying a high market profile and market share.

Well Hub members, It's that time of year again when the two arch old enemies of Ocean Beach and Warilla Hotels, go head to head in their annual "Clash Of The Titans" amateur fishing club competition.
It will certainly take a combined team effort to reign supreme once again for the mighty Warilla club.
Listening to a few members of the strong Ocean Beach Hotel outfit, they seem to be quietly confident of snatching back the prized piece of silverware.
With some minor changes to the point scoring system this year, the fish themselves are also sure to be winners on the day.
It's great to see that some amateur clubs are taking the initiative in promoting and educating about sustainability of fish stocks and thinking not just for today, but for tommorrow.
Stay tuned as HUB will post results and some photos of this muchly anticipated event.
