Date Fished:   Monday, 2nd November 2009 Action:
Location:   Terrigal
Result:   Hi guys, Headed up the coast to Terrigal with mate (and fishing guru) Al McGlashan to target some of the bigger kings which have been hanging around the 100m reefs. We launched at Terrigal at about 7:30am and made our way out to a known bait ground for some slimies and yakkas. They weren't all that thick but we were lucky enough to bag about 10 or so and a live squid for luck. The wind was gusty from the south which churned up the highway out to the kingy grounds but it eventually blue itself out. When we finally got out we found a couple of other boats already hooking into some action. It wasn't long before the first baits were down, and with some solid lead, it didn't take long to reach the desired 100m mark. Almost instantly I was buckled over on a good size kingy, but as I was only lifting the lead off the floor I wasn't ready for that powerful run which Kingy's exhibit and got smashed up in seconds. With a cut finger and burnt thumb I wound up for another go. I dropped down another yakka and within 5 minutes I was onto something big, and it was giving me plenty of stick. I was using a Daiwa Saltist outfit so I knew I was in good hands. 100m of water is more like 200 metres when you are hooked up on a good kingfish, you just have to hang on. It took about 10 minutes to see some colour and I realised I had a personal best on the end of the line, plus the next 2 weeks or so worth of quality fish in the freezer. One quick gaff strike and Al lifted my biggest kingfish so far into his boat - going just on 10kgs. I know Kingfish come much bigger but I'm not complaining. Al was on next with a solid kingy to 8kg. A couple of the local charters were also doing their best to lift up these kings, and as they were jigging large metals, they certainly earnt their catch. We drifted over the mark a few more times and with no signs of action on the sounder, we decided to head back in. Along the way Al tried another known spot and managed to lift another 7kg fish into the boat, he definately knows his stuff. An awesome day and a great experience all round. Can't wait to do it all again. Cheers, Warren (Triggerfish)
