The first impression I get when someone is talking about fishing the top end of Australia, is of remote, unpopulated and untouched wilderness. For me, these 3 important features are carefully taken into consideration when choosing a destination for a fishing adventure. To fish such an area has been an ambition I had shared with long time friend and fellow Fishin Hub director Warren Keelan. Earlier this year it was time to stop talking about such an adventure and start planning our assault on finding and fishing one of Australia’s remaining frontiers.
Knowing what we wanted but unsure of our final destination, Warren and I spent many gruelling hours perusing the internet for our desired location. We found it tucked away on the North Western tip of the Northern Territory’s Cobourg Peninsula. One of Australia’s remaining little known fishing frontiers, a place named Cape Don.
Proclaimed as one of the best fishing locations in Australia, Cape Don is an idyllic setting where fish are abundant and people are few. Located inside Cobourg Marine Park where commercial fishing is prohibited, Cape Don provides exclusive access to spectacular coastline, remote islands and unspoilt sandy beaches......oh, and not to mention a plethora of sportfish right at your feet.
Over the 3 day fly in fly out stay there were copious amounts of Barramundi caught on lures up to 80cm. Warren’s first ever Threadfin Salmon (then his second) and being absolutely demoralised by Giant Trevally on poppers. Bottom Jigging for Spanish Mackarel, Black Jewfish, Coral Trout as well as mud crabbing with only a spear.
So if you’ve ever thought about fishing the top end, do yourself a favour and get your backside to Cape Don for a fishing adventure you’ll never forget. From Barra to Bluewater, Cape Don has got the lot, all with a five star service.
Ask for Kristin Barr and tell him the boys from The Fishin Hub sent you.
